Abstract

[Also in Division F2] The braking system of a four-wheeled vehicle is controlled automatically to prevent the speed of any wheel differing from an intermittently corrected reference speed by measuring the speed of each wheel, calculating the deceleration in intervals determined by a timer and de-energizing the brake of any wheel whose slip exceeds a predetermined value. As shown, each wheel is associated with a pulse train generator 1-4, whose frequency is proportional to angular speed. Signals from the rear wheel generators 3, 4 are fed alternatively by relay 6, together with clock pulses from timer 5 to unit 7, to provide a speed signal, and unit 8, to provide a deceleration signal. If the latter does not exceed a predetermined value, the former is passed via relay 9 to a reference speed calculator 10. The reference speed signal is stored in unit 10 for one time interval and recalculated during that interval in accordance with the change in speed, as measured by unit 7, and the length of the time interval, which may be constant or varied inversely with the calculated deceleration. The generators 1-4 also feed their signals to individual units 19-22, where they are combined with the reference speed signal to calculate wheel slip, and to individual units 23-26, where they are combined with the clock pulses to calculate deceleration. When the slip and deceleration signals exceed predetermined values in combination, a following relay 15-18 is actuated to energise a valve 11-14 which cuts off the braking pressure on the appropriate wheel.
