Abstract

1,242,864. Porous metal laminates. DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd. 13 May, 1969 [15 May, 1968], No. 23027/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B3, C7 and F2] An acoustic element comprises at least one surface layer including a plurality of apertures and at least one underlayer in the form of a three-dimensional network of intercommunicating cells and made substantially of metal. The underlayer may be made by spraying, dipping or electrodepositing metal, e.g. Ag, Cu, Fe, Ni and alloys on to a porous substrate, e.g. felt, sponge or foam, particularly a reticulated polyurethane foam. The substrate may then be removed by heating. The surface layer may be a woven or meshed plastics or metal material, or an open-cell construction, and should have a lower porosity than the underlayer. The layers may be separated by other porous layers or may be directly bonded. Bonding may be by adhesive or by welding. In one example, two foam layers of different porosities are superposed and made integral by depositing metal thereon, and are used as acoustic elements for covering silencers and jet engine exhausts.
