1,243,473. Conveying solids in liquids. R.S.T. INTERNATIONAL METALS Ltd. Sept.16, 1969 [Sept.16, 1968], No.45664/69. Heading F1R [Also in Division F2] A one-way valve in a hydraulic rock hoisting system in which the rock is mixed with water and fed from a reservoir 10 into the cylinder of a hydraulic ram via an outlet 32, comprises a pivoted closure member 16 with a chamber 27 whose buoyancy can be varied by filling with air and water via flexible pipes 28 and 30, respectively, and a seat 14 against which the member 16 seals when it becomes buoyant. In operation water is fed into a replaceable inlet pipe 20, and air is fed into the chamber 27 so that the valve is closed by its buoyancy, and the pressure of the ram completing its displacement stroke. Shortly before the ram retracts, water is fed to the chamber 27, to cause it to be opened by the reducing buoyancy and the pressure differential between the inlet 20 and outlet 32, to connect the contents of the reservoir with the ram. When the contents are displaced from the ram via an outlet conduit, pressure is applied to the outlet 32, and air is supplied to the chamber 27 to close the valve and complete the cycle. Simultaneously with the valve closing, high pressure water is supplied to the seat 14 via a ring of passages 22 to clean the seat.
