Abstract
1,245,913. Isoprene. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 29 Jan., 1970 [30 Jan., 1969], No. 2961/70. Heading C5E. Isoprene is prepared by contacting isobutene with glycol methylene ether in the gas phase in the presence of a solid catalyst. Ethylene oxide which is formed as a by-product may be reacted with formaldehyde to give glycol methylene ether which may be recycled to the reaction zone. The catalyst may be a solid acid catalyst, such as Al 2 0 3 , 5i0 2 , SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 -MgO, diatomaceous earth, a molecular sieve or NiSO 4 , optionally mixed with an oxide of cobalt or a Group I or II metal or with an inorganic salt. The reaction may be carried out at 200-500‹ C. with a molar ratio of isobutene : glycol methylene ether of 1 : 1 to 50 : 1.
