Abstract

1,246,352. Collapsible steering columns. MONROE AUTO EQUIPMENT CO. 12 Aug., 1969 [21 Aug., 1968], No. 40362/69. Heading B7H. A collapsible steering column capable of being returned to its initial normal position after having been collapsed due to impact comprises forward and rearward shaft sections 20, 22 non-rotatably but slidably interconnected. The rearward section 22 is mainly hexagonal in cross-section and slides within an annular guide member 66 having an internal complementary configuration to permit the rotary motion of section 22 to be transmitted to the forward section which comprises a tubular wall member 64 fixedly secured to the member 66 and likewise at its opposite end to a mounting portion 52 which is coupled to the usual steering gear box. The tubular wall member 64 provides forward and rearward chambers 48, 50 divided by a valve member 80 coupled to the end of the shaft section 22. Fluid is contained in the respective chambers and upon impact at the end of the steering column the section 22 is forced forwardly causing spring loaded discs 100, 102 to be pushed back and open ports 94 … 98 permitting fluid to flow from chamber 48 into chamber 50. At least one opening 114 is provided communicating with one of the ports and is normally closed by a sleeve 118 which remains in this position during the forward movement of the section 22, Fig. 4. However upon the section 22 being withdrawn the sleeve 118 is caused, due to the fluid in the rearward chamber 50, to slide and uncover the opening 114 such that a reverse flow of the fluid from chamber 50 to chamber 48 can take place thereby permitting the steering column to be reset to its initial position. By adjusting the nut 90 securing the valve member 80 and discs 100, 102 against the spring 110 on the end of the shaft section 22, the load at which the column collapses under impact may be preset.
