Abstract

1,249,008. Tin recovery by froth flotation. TRADE & INDUSTRY SECRETARY OF. 4 Aug., 1970 [14 Aug., 1969], No 40663/69. Heading B2H. A finegrained de-stimed; and sulphide-free tin ore is beneficiated by flotation at a pH of 2.0-4.0 using a collector for the tin comprising a mixture of a salt of a fatty acid and a phosphonic acid (having the general formula R-PO(OH) 2 in which R is an alkyl, hydroxy alkyl, aryl or alkaryl radical) in the proportion of 1-3.5 parts by weight of the fatty acid salt to one part by weight of the phosphonic acid. Preferably, the fatty acid salt is added as a warm aqueous solution and . the phosphonic acid as a dilute aqueous solution of the sodium salt. The salt of the fatty acid may be a sodium or potassium salt and the fatty acid may be unsaturated, e.g. oleic, linoleic or linolenic acid. A frothing agent may be added during the flotation process. Cassiterite may be recovered from a tinbearing ore by reducing the ore in size, desliming and removal of sulphide by a flotation process. The remaining tin flotation. feed is conditioned at a pH of 8.0-9.0 with sodium silicate, further conditioned with sodium silicofluoride and sulphuric acid at a pH of 2.5-3.5 and finally floated with a sodium oleate/phosphonic acid mixture. The rougher concentrate froth may be further cleaned by two or three stages of reflotation at the same pH. Examples are given.
