Abstract
1,249,150. Measuring blood pressure. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 24 Dec., 1968 [30 Dec., 1967], No. 61320/68. Heading ASK. Apparatus for monitoring blood pressure continuously comprises a pressure transducer, for converting variations in the pressure of a liquid in a channel 8 into corresponding variations in an electrical signal, said pressure transducer being connected via said channel 8 to a catheter tube 7, a liquid container 9, having means for modifying the pressure of liquid contained therein, which is connected to said channel either through a main communication path 14 or via a capillary tube 16. The liquid container 9 has a flexible wall surrounded by an inflatable sleeve 10 to which air is supplied by a rubber bellows 11. Liquid passes from the container through a flexible tube 13 to a valve 18, which either directs liquid through tube 14, or capillary 16, or both. The catheter 7 is connected by a valve 19 either to the channel 8, or to a suction duct 20 for withdrawing a quantity of blood for testing, or to both the channel 8 and the suction duct 20 for evacuating air from the apparatus prior to use. In use the valve 18 connects the capillary tube 16 to the liquid container to maintain a small flow of liquid (1-2 mls per hour) through the capillary and catheter to prevent the catheter end from becoming blocked by coagulation of blood.
