Abstract

1,249,280. Coated packaging material. DR. KURT HERBERTS & CO. 27 Feb., 1970, No. 9596/70. Addition to 1,220,378. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] The packaging foil of parent Specification, wherein a coating of vinyl or vinylidene polymer is applied to a primed base comprising one or more flexible foils is modified in that the primer comprises (a) a polymer of H 2 C=CXA where X=C1, F and A=H, X, (b) an isocyanate having 2 or more isocyanate groups, the NCO content of (a) + (b) being at least 0.1 wt. %, and (c) a hydroxy-terminated reaction product of a hydroxy-terminated linear polyester and a diisocyanate, the weight ratio of (c) to (a) being not more than 60:40. The foil may be made by the succesive application to the base and evaporation of solutions or dispersions of the primer and the vinyl or vinylidene polymer coating. The substrate may be polyamide or corona-treated unstretched or biaxially stretched polypropylene film and the top coating may be obtanied from a polyvinylidene chloride dispersion. The component (c) of the primer may be a polyurethane of molecular weight 50,000 to 150,000, sold under the Registered Trade Mark “Desmocoll”, which may be made by reacting a polyester of a dicarboxylic acid of up to 10 C atoms (e.g. adipic acid) and a C 2 -C 6 diol in slight excess with a diisocyanate (examples of which are given. The component (a) may be a vinylidene chloride-acrylonitrile copolymer. Component (b) should be used in amount such that the NCO content of (a) + (b) + (c) is at least 0.5 wt. %. Components (a) and (c) may be mixed before use, with addition of component (b) immediately prior to use.
