Abstract

1,249,463. Indicator lamps. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 14 Oct., 1968 [13 Oct., 1967], No. 46767/67. Heading F4R. An indicator lamp comprises a casing containing at least two light sources and having a window through which light from the sources is emitted, each source producing two beams one of which is peculiar to the particular source and is visible over a relatively small area of the window and the other of which is visible over a relatively large area of the window. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 a plurality of bulbs 6 is located in respective compartments arranged around the periphery of a cup-shaped casing 1 and light from each bulb is emitted through a differently coloured filter 3 and an apertured mask 7. Light from any bulb also passes through a filter 5 of the same colour as the filter 3 and is reflected from a member 13 through a lens 11 of relatively large area. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the casing (20) contains a block (25) of translucent plastics material having cavities (26) in which the bulbs are located, each cavity being lined with coloured translucent material (27, 28). The front face (29) of the block is ribbed or frosted so that light incident thereon at an angle is diffused over a wide area, and each bulb therefor produces an intense beam of relatively small area immediately in front of its cavity and a less intense beam spread over the whole of the remaining face of the block. A third embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) employs an L-shaped block (35) of translucent plastics material and the bulbs (34) are located in such a way that light from any bulb passes through an individual coloured filter (44) and also enters a chamfered surface (38) of the block to be diffused over the whole of the front face (41). In a fourth embodiment (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) three bulbs are disposed in respective sector-shaped compartments in a cupshaped casing (50) and each bulb illuminates a respective aperture (54) in a mask (53) of smaller diameter than the casing. Light from each bulb also enters a clear plastics disc (56) covering the mouth of the casing through an annular filter (55) to give a wide-area beam. In a further embodiment (Figs. 8, 9, not shown) capless bulbs (120) are employed, each bulb being located in a respective compartment at the bottom of a casing and arranged so that light passes through the pinch (122) of the bulb and through an aperture in the bulb-holder to illuminate a corresponding aperture in a mask. Light from the bulb proper is reflected through a large window (112) at the top of the casing.
