Abstract

1,249,559. Quenching cracked gas. MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 29 Aug., 1969 [6 Sept., 1968], No. 43188/69. Heading C5E. [Also in Division F4] Cracked gas, containing ethylene and propylene for example, and obtained by thermal cracking of kerosene or a heavier hydrocarbon such as light or heavy gas oil, is quenched in two stages as follows:- (1) an indirect quench in a heat exchanger, at a mass velocity of 50-120 kg./m.2 second and in not more than 0À5 second, to a temperature (T) represented by the equation T = (0À56t) + α where t is a volumetric average boiling point of the feed hydrocarbons calculated by in which t 10 , t 30 , t 50 , t 70 and t 90 are the temperatures in ‹ C. at which 10, 30, 50, 70 and 90 vol. % of feed hydrocarbons is distilled in ASTM distillation, and α is a temperature in the range 340-420‹ C., the temperature (T) being above 450‹ C. but not exceeding 600‹ C. and being a temperature of the cracked gas at an outlet of the heat exchanger; and (2) further directly quenching the cracked gas to a temperature of 150-250‹ C. by spraying with a heavier oil of which the 50% recovery temperature by ASTM distillation is in the range 200-100‹ C.
