Abstract

[Also in Divisions B2, B8, C1 and F2] A sheet 43 Fig. 6 is supported by conveyor rollers 25 between which are positioned, out of contact with sheet 43, hollow rollers 26 formed with radial orifices 29 which may be in the form of projecting nozzles and which may be arranged helically on the surface of the rollers. Pressurized coating or etching fluid is supplied to the interior of rollers 26 and is discharged, as the rollers rotate, on to the surface of sheet 43. The hollow rollers may alternatively be arranged above the sheet, or hollow rollers may be arranged above and below the sheet. When conveyer rollers are used in contact with the sheet, the latter may either be driven or transport of the sheet is effected by fluid discharged from the hollow rollers. When heated sheets, e.g. of glass, are transported by contact with conveyer rollers, the latter may be covered by a material e.g. boron nitride, which does not stick to the glass at these elevated temperatures. In Fig. 9 a duct 1 has a curved upper surface formed with spaced transverse slots 4 and engaged by the upper run of an endless belt 2 supported by driven rollers 3 and formed with aperture 5. Compressed fluid is thereby discharged from duct 1 through the slots 4 and the apertures 5 which thus direct streams on to a sheet 6, the aperture 5 approaching and receding from sheet 6. In Fig. 11 a curved sheet of glass 102 is engaged between upper concave rollers 104 and lower convex rollers 101 either or both of which may be hollow and apertured. Sheet 102 is engaged between the co-operating rollers 101, 104 on its upper surface by concave rollers 107 and on its lower surface by supporting convex roller 105. The apparatus may be used for depositing optical layers on glass, the enamelling of sheet metal and glass, and the etching and silvering of glass. As an example, a sheet of glass, supported vertically, passes between rollers supplied with a 50% solution of industrial hydrofluoric acid for etching through or frosting the glass.
