Abstract

1,262,416. Laser range finding. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 30 June, 1970, No. 31498/70. Heading H4D. A viewing system includes a pulsed laser wherein the time interval between pulsing the laser and gating an image detector is varied in synchronism with the colour employed in the display device. Generator 21 provides a staircase waveform which (i) pulses laser 10, (ii) adjusts variable delay 16 setting the range gate timing and (iii) adjusts the gains of amplifiers 18 through logic 22, setting the colour of the display. The laser output is varied in mean power or repetition frequency to provide constant illumination at all ranges. The image at each range is viewed after four stages of image intensification by a monochrome TV receiver 15 which feeds equal signals to the three guns of a colour TV tube 19 through amplifiers 18. Thus in the image on the screen the colour of an object indicates its range. The three-gun tube may be replaced by a dual phosphor screen tube whose display colour is varied by changing the beam energy, i.e. varying the anode and grid voltages. In this case logic 22 is not necessary. The generator 21 has a manual override so that the image at any particular range may be “held”.
