Abstract
1,262,683. Lathes. PITTLER MASCHINENFABRIK A.G. 25 March, 1969 [28 March, 1968], No. 15495/69. Heading B3T. [Also in Division F2] In a cam-controlled automatic lathe having a control shaft 3 normally rotatable by main drive means (not shown), the shaft is also rotatable by an auxiliary means 13 driving a part 8 of an electromagnetic coupling through an irreversible worm drive, the other part of the coupling being fixed to the shaft 3. For rotating the shaft during interruption of the drive from the main drive means, the auxiliary means 13 is energized to rotate a shaft 14 and worm screw (not shown) meshing with a worm-wheel 9 concentric with shaft 3 and supported thereabout by bearings 10. Simultaneously with energization of the means 13, which may be an electric motor, the winding 5 of the electromagnetic coupling 7 is energized to couple the worm-wheel 9 to the shaft 3. The winding 5, located in a recess of the coupling part 6 fixed to the shaft, is non-rotatably secured by a pin 21 to the lathe frame 1. If the shaft 3, already rotating under the action of the main drive means, is required to be stopped after the main drive means has been disconnected, the coupling 7 may be engaged without energization of the auxiliary motor 13 whereby, due to the irreversibility of the worm unit the coupling then acts as a brake to stop the shaft.
