Abstract

1,262,748. Photo-electrophoretic imaging. XEROX CORP. Feb. 21, 1969 [Feb.23, 1968], No.9481/69. Heading G2H. Photo-electrophoretic imaging process comprises contacting the surface of a transparent electrode with a suspension of electrically photosensitive particles in an insulating liquid having immersed therein at least one coronode, and exposing the suspension through the electrode where the latter contacts the surface while moving the electrode past the coronode thus forming an image of the photosensitive particles on the electrode. The coronode(s) may be in the form of a needle, a knife edge or a wire. In a first embodiment, the transparent electrode is in the form of a rotatable drum inside of which are positioned a lamp and an original to be copied to effect exposure of the suspension, the lower part of the drum contacts a suspension containing 3 knife-edge coronodes; the drum is rotated through the suspension so that there is formed thereon an image which is then transferred to a web, and the drum cleaned. In an alternative embodiment, the electrode is in the form of an endless belt to which is attached on its surface an original to be copied; the belt and original are passed through 3 imaging stations each comprising a lamp, a colour filter, a suspension containing particles complementary to the colour of the filter, and a knife-edge coronode, so that there is formed on the belt a multi-colour image which is transferred to a web.
