Abstract

1,267,466. Continuous casting. KUIBYSHEVSKY METALLURGIGHESKY ZAVOD IMENI V.I. LENINA. 4 Nov., 1970 [4 Nov., 1969], No. 52391/70. Heading B3F. Molten metal 4, such as Al or Al alloy, from a feeder 1, is directly cooled by liquid from a header 8 (with a shield 9) while prevented from escaping from the top of a starter plate 2 and, later, from the top of the solidified casting 3, by a magnetic field created by an annular solid inductor 6, e.g. of Cu, secured on a member 10 which has (or forms with the header 8) a coolant duct 11. The shield 9 reduces the field intensity in the region of the feeder outlet. A distributing cup 1b is installed after pouring has started. The member 10 is detachably secured to the header 8 and both are of dielectric material and have slots in which the inductor 6 is secured. The inductor is coupled to or integral with bus-bars 7 which supply its current and are cooled by water in copper pipes 13. The casting may be rectangular.
