Abstract
1,267,575. Mullite synthesis. W. R. GRACE & CO. 19 Sept., 1969 [16 Dec., 1968], No. 46416/67. Heading C1A. Mullite is synthesized by mixing a solution of an alkali metal silicate or a sol of silica and a solution of an aluminate or aluminium salt, at a pH sufficient to form a gel of silica and alumina, which is spray-dried, washed and calcined, e.g. at 900-1400‹ C. The solution of a silicate is preferably sodium silicate. The aluminium compound is preferably an inorganic aluminium salt, such as aluminium nitrate. Example 1 uses a solution of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide as the silica source and a solution of alumina trihydrate and sodium hydroxide, mixed with a solution of aluminium nitrate as the alumina source. The sodium content of the spray-dried product may be reduced by ion exchangewith ammonium sulphate solution. The product may have a surface area of up to 120 m
