Abstract
1,267,633. Radiation analysers; measuring voltage. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. May 18, 1970 [June 2, 1969], No.23918/70. Headings G1A and G1U. In apparatus for recording the ratio of a sample radiation beam intensity and a reference beam intensity, the circuit after synchronous detector 26 is provided for offset and scaling purposes during the recording. Monochromator 2 is synchronized with the pen or paper drive of chart recorder 66 and delivers a narrow wavelength beam to a beam directing system of rotating sector mirrors 6, 8 and fixed mirrors 16, 18, to form alternately effective reference and sample paths 14, 12, the latter providing an intensity reaching the detector 22 dependent on the transmissivity of the sample. After amplifier 24, the detector 26 synchronous with motor 10 switches the sample signals on to line 28 and reference signals into line 30. If it is known that the ratio between the voltages on lines 28, 30 will only vary between, for example, 70% and 90% transmission, it will be required to record only the values of the ratio in this range. This necessitates rendering 70% as the zero input to the recorder and scaling up any variations above this value so that 90% represents the maximum. To do this the circuit comprises two differential amplifiers 34, 32, one for the sample and one for the reference signals and each provided with feedback to its inverting input. Offset is provided by use of resistor 44, the tap 46 of which is pre-set to deliver 70% of the reference signal at 42 to the inverting input of amplifier 38. Scaling of the signal passing through the sample channel is effected by pre-setting the gain of amplifier 34 by adjustment of variable resistor 58, this gain being dependent on the ratio of the sum of the resistances of 58 and 56 to the resistance of 56. A mathematical discussion giving the derivation of the relationship between the ratio of the amplifier outputs, the ratio of the inputs, the offset and the scaling factor, is provided.
