Abstract
1,268,010. Variable speed gearing. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 16 July, 1969 [17 July, 1968], No. 36732/69. Heading F2D. A variable speed transmission comprises a shift rail 114 parallel to parallel first and second axes 26, 62 rotatable about the first axis, first gears 22, 24, 58 meshing with second gears 110, 102, 88 rotatable about the second axis, a power input (e.g. shaft 40) connected to at least one of the first gears, selected gears 110, 102, 92, 88 rotatable about the second axis being connectible to an output by clutch elements 108, 115 moved axially by shift forks 122, 124 slidable along the rail 114 due to having cam followers 134, 136 engaging cam grooves 166, 168 in a rotatable cam plate 140 also engaged by a detent follower 170 to bias the cam plate to positions corresponding to a selected gear being connected to the output. In the arrangement shown a pinion (94), Fig. 8 (not shown) meshes with the gears 24 and 92 to give a reverse ratio, and the gear 58 is axially slidable under the action of another shift fork 126 to engage teeth 60 on a gearing unit 50 to provide a through drive. The detent follower 170 is at one end of a lever 228 centrally pivoted at 230 and biased by a tension spring 232. The cam plate 140 is rotatable through about 160 degrees by a lever 152 on a shaft 154 having a geared connection 162, 164 to the cam plate. Auxiliary gearing may also be included in the transmission, the output shaft 72 having an axially movable clutch element 82 to selectively engage gears 74, 76 each meshing with a gear 54; 52 on unit 50. The element 82 is movable by a shift fork 172 slidable axially by a lever 186, 180. The element 82 has square teeth 192 engageable by a parking lever 188 connected by a root 196 movable by a bell crank pivoting at 210. Engagement of the parking lever when either gear 74 or 76 is connected to the shaft 72 is prevented by a stepped collar 218 on the lever passing through an eye 216 on the fork 172.
