Abstract

1,268,709. Gas analysis. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. May 5, 1970 [May 16, 1969], No. 25012/69. Heading G1B. The concentration of dust in a gas stream is obtained by passing the dust laden gas stream into a centrifugal flow separating device 10 and either monitoring the difference in pressure at the inlet 12 and outlet 16 of the device while maintaining constant the rate of gas flow through the device or monitoring the rate of gas flow through the device while maintaining constant the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the device, the monitored value being indicative of the dust concentration. As shown, a pressure transducer 34 which may actuate a recorder is connected across the inlet 12 and outlet 16 of a cyclone 10 having a closeable opening 18 located above a hopper 20. At predetermined intervals the dust in a gas stream is allowed to accumulate in the cyclone 10 during pre-selected times and the consequential decreases in pressure difference at the inlet and outlet are indicative of the dust concentrations in the gas stream during the pre-selected times, the rate of flow of gas through the cyclone being maintained constant by a critical orifice or servooperated valve 24 which is connected in a conduit 26 leading to a gas impeller. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), a device (42) which is controlled by the pressures at the inlet (12) and outlet (16) of a cyclone (10) maintains the pressure difference constant and a flowmeter 40 senses changes in gas flow to indicate dust concentration in a gas stream fed to the cyclone (10). In either embodiment an alarm may be actuated automatically to indicate when a pre-selected dust concentration is exceeded and signals indicative of dust concentration may be utilized for control of a plant.
