Abstract
1286900 Making structural units; seaming HUNTER DOUGLAS INTERNATIONAL NV 29 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 61633/70 Headings B3A and B3J [Also in Division E1] A structural unit composed of two pairs of structural members 2, 3, 4, 6 has one of the pairs of members 2, 3 formed with longitudinal slot structures along its marginal edges to receive the edges of the members of the other pair and hold them by deformation of at least the members of one pair. The members 2, 3, Fig. 1, are extruded aluminium or aluminium alloy sections with a central web and marginal shoulders in which the slots are formed. The members 4, 6 are aluminium or aluminium alloy strips fed from reels 13, 14 through guide bars 76, 77 to positioning rollers pairs 101-103, 106-108 for the members 1, 2. The rollers are mounted on upper and lower frames 26, 22 which are relatively adjustable for different unit heights. The members are united by rollers 116, 117 provided with spaced projections which deform the outer wall of each slot to close the slot on to the edges of the members 4, 6 at spaced intervals. The deforming rollers are each backed up by a pair of rollers (142), (143), Figs. 8, 10, 12 (not shown), which engage against the shoulders of the members 1, 2. The structural unit may be curved by rollers at the exit station 11 of the apparatus to compensate for loading. The unit is cut to the required length by a saw 181. In a modification of the joint between the members 2, 3, 4, 6, Fig. 13, the outer wall 213 of the slot structure is formed with ribs to guide the deforming roller which is, also aligned by the flange 211 on the edge of the extruded members 2, 3. The metal between the ribs is forced into a slot 217 on the inner wall of the slot structure. The outer wall may have a projection 226, Fig. 19, to deform the member 216. The strip members are preferably corrugated, Fig. 17 (not shown), to give rigidity to the unit. The strip members may be provided with expandable ribs, 232, Fig. 21, which are deformed by projections 226 on the inner wall of the slot structure. The units are used as beams for roofs 235, Fig. 21, and the strip members 231 can support a ceiling member 236 to define a space 238 filled with insulating material. The members of the unit may be given a wood pattern or covered by a decorative cover, Fig. 26 (not shown). End caps (261), Fig. 27 (not shown), may be provided.
