Abstract
1288474 Roller bearing cage TEXTRON Inc 18 June 1970 [5 May 1969] 29639/70 Heading F2A A roller bearing cage has an annulus 13 of ductile material having a plurality of angularly spaced roller pockets 14 each pocket extending radially through the annulus and being defined at each end by walls comprising the annulus, each wall having a recess opening axially outwardly and having a depth such that the remaining wall thickness is small compared with the overall wall thickness, there being an axially inwardly extending projection 24 integral with each thin end wall portion adapted to retain a recessed roller 12 in the pocket. The rollers may be either cylindrical or tapered, and the radial clearance of each projection in the recess in each roller exceeds the roller radial freedom of the roller in its pocket. The roller bearing may have a race having radial flanges 17, 18 between which the rollers are seated, the projections of the cage retaining the rollers between the flanges. The bearing is assembled by forming a cage having roller pockets defined in an annulus of ductile material, each pocket having at its ends a thin portion of the ductile material, inserting the rollers into each pocket and axially inwardly indenting the thin wall portion so as to form the projections for retaining the rollers.
