Abstract
1288597 Light modulation; magneto-optic storage arrangements GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 9 Oct 1969 [9 Jan 1969] 49639/69 Headings H3B and H4F [Also in Division G5] An element 2 in a display system comprises a thin ferromagnetic film 23 constructed to have a regular magnetic domain structure which produces optical grating lines in an adjacent colloid 24 of ferromagnetic particles, and the grating lines in any elemental area may be rotated in the plane of the film by application thereto of a suitably directed magnetic field above a threshold value so that light from a source 1 is reflected and either passes through a viewing window 4 (line a, area A) or does not (lines b, area B). Two orthogonal sets of conductors 5, 6 (35, 36 in Fig. 4) provide a D.C. magnetic field at any selected area using XY addressors 34, 46, but since the plot of domain rotation against D.C. magnetic field is moderately linear, substantial cross-talk with other areas in the same X or Y lines occurs. The corresponding plot for an A.C. field shows a steep rise of rotation angle at a predetermined A.C. field strength, Fig. 5 (not shown). Therefore in the arrangement shown in Fig. 4 the resultant D.C. field, which is in either the X or Y direction according to the direction of current in lines 35, is chosen so as to be less than the threshold value, but is augmented by an A.C. field, also less than the critical value, from Helmholtz coils 39 along an axis α, commonly at 45 degrees to the X and Y axes, so that the domains are rotated to lie along either the X or Y axes, areas C and D, corresponding to write or erase operations, respectively. The A.C. field may be continuous, or pulsed simultaneously with the D.C. pulses from the addressors 34, 46, and in either case may contain a lower frequency A.C. component of above threshold value to provide a relatively slow automatic erasure, Fig. 3 (not shown), obviating the need for current reversal in line 35. In modifications, the A.C. field is directed along the Z or Y axes, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), and may be provided by means other than a Helmholtz coil, e.g. a flat field coil below the conductors 5, 6, or parallel conductors integral with the element 2, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown). As described, the film is an 85% nickel 15% iron permalloy film, electroplated to a thickness of 20,000-30,000 over sputtered gold, using a sulphate bath. Application of a negative magnetostriction and a tensile stress to the film gave magnetostriction and internal stress values of opposite sign to form fine line changes in the magnetic field gradient normal to the film plane, corresponding to a striped domain structure at the film surface.
