Abstract
1289121 Electrohydraulic crushing UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 29 Jan 1970 [10 Feb 1969] 7168/69 Heading B2A Electro-hydraulic crushing apparatus particularly for crushing samples for analysis comprises a support 16 to receive a preferably disposable sample container 28 having spaced electrodes 29, 33 therein, means to clamp the container in the support and means to connect the electrodes across a high voltage source. The sample container is supported over the whole outer surface against the explosive forces of crushing therein. The electrodes may be brass copper or titanium, and the container of plastics. As described, a toggle clamp presses a brass cap 35 over the container 28 and makes contact with a plate 11 which is earthed. Simultaneously the bottom of the container contacts an electrode 24 of an air spark gap 26, 25. Charging capacitors 13, 14 are arranged in a ring around the sample container and spark gap. E.H.T. is applied via a charging resistor and contact 15 to a plate 12 which contacts the electrode 25. The apparatus is enclosed in a safety box 37 having a lid operated switch 41, 42 which discharges the capacitors when the lid 27 is opened. In an alternative embodiment a key-operated locking mechanism and the key switches also the EHT which must be off to remove the key from the power supply.
