Abstract

1289242 Metallic phosphides GTE SYLVANIA Inc 19 Jan 1971 [19 Jan 1970] 2622/71 Heading C1A Phosphides of refractory or semi-conductor metals are prepared by forming a solution of orthophosphoric acid and the appropriate metal or its oxide, heating the said solution to a temperature sufficient to remove water and form the corresponding metal phosphate, and heating the metal phosphate at a temperature of 700-1100‹ C. in a hydrogen atmosphere for at least 3 hours to reduce the phosphate to phosphide. The invention is particularly concerned with the production of the phosphides of tungsten, molybdenum and gallium for use in coating the lead-in wires of electrical devices as described in Specification 1,187,934.
