Abstract
1290234 Delayed coking process LUMMUS CO 26 May 1970 [26 May 1969] 25313/70 Heading C5E Graphitizable needle coke is made by separating at 13, 18 from a feed derived from coal tar pitch 10, a fraction 21 at least 80% by weight of the components of which boil in the range 600 to 1200 F., e.g. 600 to 1000 F., and delay coking the fraction at 25. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, a fraction 14 boiling up to 1000 F. leaves a vacuum flash tower 13 and is delivered to a combination fractionator 18 from which a light oil 33 and heavy bottoms 21 (B.R. 600 to 1000 F.) are obtained. A part 32, 33 of one or both of 21, 33 may be mixed with the bottoms 31 from the tower 13 for delay coking at 37 for electrode coke. Some of the bottoms 21 is recycled at 53, 54, as are overheads 19, 20 from the drums 25, 37, and fresh pitch may by-pass 13, 18 at 10a for coking at 25. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the pitch (100) is supplied directly to the fractionator (101), the bottoms from which is flashed at (105) before being delivered to the drums (115). The coal tar pitch may be derived by either high or low temperature carbonization.
