Abstract

1292831 Invisible inks MEREDITH CORP 29 Sept 1969 [17 Jan 1969] 47835/69 Heading C4A [Also in Division C3] An invisible ink composition comprises (i) either a phenolic or enolic compound which reacts with an oxidizing metal ion, or a compound which reacts with an indicator, to provide a coloured reaction product; (ii) up to 5% by wt. of a water-soluble and/or a water-insoluble binder; and (iii) a carrier capable of dissolving at least 3% by wt. of (i) and 0À5% by wt. of (ii), and having a B.Pt. of 135-230‹ C. and a vapour pressure of 3À8-0À02 mm. Hg at 20‹ C. The reactive compound (i) may be gallic acid, propyl gallate, acetoacetic ester, phenol, resorcinol, cresol, vanillin, guaiacol or a zinc resorcinol complex, which are developed by ferric or other oxidizing metal ions, or it may be citric acid or lead acetate, which are developed by Congo Red and xylenol orange respectively. The binder (ii) may be one or more of polyvinyl pyrrolidone, cellulose hydroxy propoxyether, or a polyamide. Suitable carriers (iii) include various glycols, glycol ethers, esters and ether alcohols. Optional ingredients are (iv) U.V. fluorescent materials ,e.g. #-methyl umbelliferone, (v) citric acid stabilizer, (vi) fillers, e.g. silica or silicates, (vii) anti-oxidant and U.V. light stabilizers, e.g. 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone. In Formula 9 the carrier includes water. Specifications 1,286,084, 1,279,448 and 1,292,832 are referred to.
