1295132 Metal-plastics laminate AUSTRALIAN IRON & STEEL PTY Ltd and UNION CARBIDE AUSTRALIA Ltd 13 April 1970 [14 April 1969] 17544/70 Heading B5N A method of producing a metal-plastics laminate wherein the metal is tinplate, tin-free steel (chromium type), chemically treated steel plate or plain steel sheet and the plastics element is polyethylene, ethylene α-olefine copolymers or blends thereof, comprises bringing the metal and the plastics element, after a bonding surface of the plastics element has been treated by corona discharge, exposure of a thin molten film to air or ozone or an activated gas plasma, treatment with a chemical cross-linking agent or treatment with an oxidizing fluid, into contact under pressure at a temperature sufficient to at least soften the plastics element, and thereafter subjecting the laminate to an annealing operation to finalize adhesion conducted at a temperature at or above the melting point of the plastics element in the range 150- 250‹ C. for a period not exceeding 30 seconds, if the metal has not been preheated to give it a heat content sufficient to finalize adhesion at or above the melting point of the plastics element without recourse to the annealing operation. The plastics element may be applied to one or both sides of the metal. The laminate may be made into containers.
