Abstract
1297477 Storage batteries R A ROWE 19 April 1971 [4 March 1970] 23087/71 Heading H1B A combined filling device and vent cut-off valve of an electric storage cell having an electrolyte tank 1, a filling hole 5 and a vent 17 allowing escape of gas to the atmosphere, comprises a stopper 7 for the filling hole 5, the vent cut-off valve 8 including a valve member 10 slidable in a cylinder 13 between a closed (upper) position preventing escape of gas from the tank 1 and an open (lower) position permitting escape of gas through the vent 17. The vent 17 is formed in a cover 6 from which the stopper 7 extends and which forms the operating means for simultaneously removing the stopper and closing the valve by means of resilient arms 23 engaging shoulders 9a of a head portion 9 of the valve member 10. A detent is formed by a resilient boss 20 which has to be forced through the hole 19 in the bottom 18 of the cylinder 13 when the valve member 10 is moved between its extreme positions. The extreme positions are determined by the engagement of the cylinder bottom 18 by the main body of the member 10 and a plate 12 or its extension rod 11. The plate 12 may be omitted when a member forming the top of the cylinder acts as a stop (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown). The body of the member 10 may in its upper position close a passage in the cylinder wall (Figs. 7 to 11, not shown) and the passage may connect with venting channels in the body in its lower position (Figs. 9 to 11). Fig. 15 shows an arrangement attached to a tank cover 52 by a threaded bushing 54 received in a threaded filling hole in the cover 54. Venting takes place through passages 49, 48, cylinder 61 and vent 73. The valve member has an intermediate enlarged section 46 of flexible material with vertical venting passages therethrough. The section 46 has a diameter slightly larger than the bore of the cylinder and acts as a detent to maintain the valve member in the upper position when the cover and plug are removed.
