Abstract

1300132 Reducing resistance to propulsion NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 19 April 1971 [2 March 1970] 9809/70 Headings B7M and B7V In a marine craft 10 the region 12 of the bottom 14 of the craft is coated with a material having a critical surface tension less than the surface tension of the liquid in which the craft is floating. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 pump 8 discharges air through holes 20 and the region 12 is roughened to encourage the flattening of air bubbles upon it. The term “critical surface tension” for a surface is defined and examples are given of materials having a critical surface tension less than the surface tension of water. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 two non-wettable regions 40, 42 are associated with air supply slots 44, 46. By operating one air supply alone the drag can be reduced on one side of the craft to produce a steering effect.
