1300179 Reactors INTERATOM INTERNATIONALE ATOMREAKTORBAU GmbH 22 Oct 1971 [24 Oct 1970] 49295/71 Heading G6C In a sodium cooled nuclear reactor, thermal energy liberated by a damaged reactor is absorbed in a heat sink within the reactor container. The hot gases from the reactor cell are circulated to the sink and then are returned to the cell by natural convection. Hot gases from a damaged reactor, 1, flow through the apertures 19, 20 to the concrete heat sink 10. The cooled gases return to the reactor cell 12, through the ducts 11. The gas path is sealed by valves or safety blow-out discs which open rapidly in event of reactor damage. The concrete inner container, 3, limits temperature and pressure in creases in chamber, 9. The outer container 4, is gas-tight and affords protection against external influences. The reactor building, 6, maintains a pressure between the building and the atmosphere so that air in the building may be discharged into an exhaust stack.
