Abstract

1300626 Microwave heating PAUL TROESTER MASCHINENFABRIK 13 April 1970 [25 April 1969] 17373/70 Heading H5H Plastics, rubber wound strands of polyester glassfibre or other articles are dielectrically heated by passing them through a waveguide 3 supplied with travelling microwave energy and intersected at spaced points along its length by a waveguide 1, 2 supplied with travelling waves. As shown, two meander shaped rectangular waveguides 1, 2 excited in the H 10 mode intersect a circular waveguide 3 at spaced points and are adjustably secured by a telescopic U-shaped waveguide 12 to a magnetron 14. Adjustment of waveguide 12 by hand or by eccentric 13 ensure that articles on conveyer 6 occupy the best position for even heating. Vertically adjustable rollers 9 supporting conveyer 6 enable coarse adjustment of this position. By arranging the rollers 9 so that the conveyer is inclined to the horizontal different parts of non-uniform articles pass successively through the best position for even heating. Waveguide 3 has wave traps 5 at its ends and a rectangular cavity resonator 4 at its centre brought into resonance by hand or automatic adjustment of a slide 17 in branch 16. Hot air or protective gas is introduced via branch 16 to waveguide 3 which is lined by two interfitting U-shaped P.T.F.E. members 21, 22 which are tensioned by springs 23 at the ends of waveguide 3. Water loads 10, 11 are provided at the ends of guides 1, 2. The angle of intersection of the travelling microwave energy trains can vary from 45 to the 90 degree shown. The respective degree of coupling to the waveguides 1, 2 can be altered by moving magnetron 14 in the direction of the arrow. The waveguides 1, 2 can be independently excited.
