Abstract
1300939 Pickup O HUBER [trading as HUBER & CO] 16 Dec 1969 [16 Dec 1968 13 Nov 1969] 61293/69 Heading H4J A magnetic pickup has a ferromagnetic element 8 (Fig. 4) operatively connected with a stylus 11. Two or more magnets 3 have similar magnet poles turned toward the element 8. At least one coil 18, 19 (Fig. 2) is mounted for excitation by a magnetic field induced in the element 8 by the magnets 3, then at least one coil 18, 19 being excited upon vibration of the element 8. As described, the pickup is stereophonic and the magnets 3 are embedded in a synthetic resin block 2 having a channel 4 the inner end of which is V-shaped. A brass sleeve 6 of square cross-section is rigidly held in the block 2. Two magnets 3 are on opposite sides of a plane of symmetry S. A rubber washer 7 resiliently secures the element 8. An S-shaped aluminium tube 9 fits on to element 8 and has a flattened end which receives the stylus 11. Non-magnetic wire 12 holds element 8 to sleeve 6. U-shaped magnetic strips 14, 15 each provide a pair of pole pieces 16, 17 and each is encircled by a coil 18, 19. The ends of the pole pices 16, 17 define a square cross-section. A housing 20 provides a magnetic return path for the magnets 3. In a modification a third magnet (3a) Fig. 6 (not shown) is perpendicular to the magnets 3. All the magnets have like poles directed to, and adjacent, the element 8. In another embodiment (Figs. 7, 8, not shown) two long magnets (3b) are at an angle of 30 degrees to the plane of symmetry of the pickup. The ferromagnetic element (8b) is formed of two parallel ferromagnetic strips (25). Another arrangement has a removable stylus assembly 1c (Fig. 9) with two magnets each having a bevelled corner (Fig. 10, not shown) adjacent the element 8. A housing 26 is formed of two members 27, 28 of plastics material held together by pins 29. A modification (Figs. 13, 14, not shown) of the embodiment of Fig. 9 has a pair of elongate magnets (3d) extending at an angle of 30 degrees to the plane of symmetry. In another modification of Fig. 9 (Figs. 15 to 18, not shown) cylindrical magnets (3e) are embedded in the two-part housing (37). Ferromagnetic cylinders (39) in the stylus assembly serve as pole pieces to focus the south poles of the magnets (3e) on the element (8). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 897,323.
