Abstract
1301132 Laminates MONSANTO CO 17 July 1970 [18 July 1969] 34786/70 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions C3 and D2] A cellulosic fibrous sheet, suitable for use as the corrugated layer in a corrugated fibreboard contains 5 to 15% of a modified phenol-aldehyde resin system and a total volatiles content of 5-10%. The modified phenol-aldehyde system has a pH in aqueous solution at 35% solids of 0À8 to 6, and comprises (1) 80 to 94% wt. of a phenol-formaldehyde resole, (2) 1 to 7% of an inorganic ammonium salt having a pH in aqueous solution at 5% solids of 0À8 to 6À5, and (3) remainder up to 100% of urea, the resole also having: (1) solubility in water up to 55% (2) 1À0 to 2À9 mols of formaldehyde per phenol ring, (3) a pH of 7 to 9À2 in aqueous solution at 35% solids, and (4) an ash content of less than 2À5% wt. Corrugated fibreboard is made by treating both the “medium” sheet and the facing sheet with the modified phenol-aldehyde resin system, drying the sheets while avoiding thermosetting, corrugating the “medium”, if not already corrugated, applying adhesive to its flutes, combining the sheets and heating to cure the resin system. The adhesive may comprise a resorcinol-starch-formaldehyde system, a phenol-formaldehyde-starch system or a urea-starch-formaldehyde system.
