Abstract
1304987 Water-soluble acrylic copolymer dental cements PENNWALT CORP 19 April 1971 [10 March 1970] 23321/71 Heading C3P Dental cements comprise (1) zinc oxide and (2) water-soluble acrylic copolymers of molecular weight 20,000 to 75,000 and containing 10 to 90 mole per cent of acrylic acid units, 0 to 5 mole per cent of C 1-8 alkyl acrylate units and the balance of units of glutaconic, aconitic, citraconic, mesaconic, itaconic, fumaric, maleic or tiglic acid. The copolymers may be prepared by copolymerization in aqueous media in the presence of a peroxide or redox catalyst, and solutions of the polymers in water and/or mono- or polyhydric alcohols may be mixed with zinc oxide to give dental cements, which may also contain magnesium, silicon, bismuth, barium, calcium or aluminium oxides, barium sulphate, sodium fluoride, calcium tungstate, sodium chloride, sodium iodide, sodium sulphate or sodium phosphate. In examples acrylic acid is copolymerized with (1) itaconic acid and (2) itaconic and maleic acids in the presence of ammonium persulphate, with (3) citraconic acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, ferrous sulphate and ascorbic acid, with (4) itaconic acid in the presence of potassium persulphate and sodium bisulphite, and with (5) glutaconic acid, mesaconic acid, aconitic acid, citraconic acid, tiglic acid, itaconic acid/maleic acid, itaconic acid/butyl acrylate, itaconic acid/ 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, citraconic acid/aconitic acid/maleic acid, glutaconic acid/itaconic acid/ ethyl acrylate and citraconic acid/itaconic acid/ methyl acrylate; the products being converted to dental cements by mixing with 90 : 10 zinc oxide/magnesium oxide containing small amounts of aluminium oxide, barium sulphate and calcium tungstate.
