Abstract

1305032 Drawing; making wires BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CABLES Ltd 26 Nov 1970 [27 Nov 1969] 58022/69 Headings B3A and B3P Wire is drawn through dies to produce a total reduction of area of at least 30% by a capstan driven at a higher peripheral speed than the speed of the wire engaged thereby before being passed into a subsequent processing apparatus 8 which includes a capstan 13 which controls the speed of the wire during drawing and subsequent processing. The apparatus 8 may be enamelling, tinning, covering twinning, quadding or bunching apparatus. Each of four wires e.g. Al, Cu, is drawn from a reel 3 through four vertically aligned dies 19, 20, 21, 22 by respective capstans 23, 24, 25, 26. Each wire is further drawn through a die 27 by a capstan 28 to produce a total reduction of area of 30-80%. Lubricant is supplied by ducts 30. The capstans for each wire are connected to pulleys 31 coupled by a driving belt 33, each of which is driven by an individual motor 34 or from a single motor (37) (Fig. 3, not shown). The peripheral speed of each capstan is greater than the wire speed by 1% to about 10% so that the wire is not heated above 150‹ C. Each drawn wire may be washed with water before it is passed via an annealer 10 to an enamelling device 8 having a positively driven capstan 13, the speed of which determines the speed of the wires throughout the apparatus.
