Abstract

1305098 Calculating apparatus; cash register NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO 3 Nov 1970 [14 Nov 1969] 52125/70 Headings G4B and G4T In a cash register or calculating machine an amount selected on a keyboard and set in a differential setting mechanism during a machine cycle is entered into a totalizer 14 only during the succeeding machine cycle, engagement and disengagement of the totalizer being controlled by a device which is selectively operable by control keys 19, 20 to effect a sub-total or total-taking operation in a single machine cycle. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 the control device includes a first selector 10 positioned by a control member 17 under the action of keys 18-21, an auxiliary selector 11 set by a further control member 22 and driven by a driving cam 12 to engage the selector 10 at given stages of the machine cycle, and sensing means 13 which detects surfaces on the selector 10 and accordingly controls engagement or disengagement of the totalizer 14 by a device 16, Fig. 4, driven by a main cam-shaft (66) (Fig. 3, not shown) through intermediate members (65), (68), (67). Operation of an addition control key 18 initiates a machine cycle in the second half of which an amount set on the keyboard is entered into the setting racks and adding segments of the differential setting mechanism, not shown in the drawings, where it is stored. In the first half of a succeeding adding operation, the totalizer 14 is initially engaged with the adding segments. Since the key 18, Fig. 1, does not move the control members 17, 22 the selector plate 26 retains its position and a feeler 51 of the sensing means 13 detects a high surface A. A finger 64, Fig. 4, is then in a position to decouple the totalizer engagement and disengagement mechanism 15 from the driving arm 69 and rod 63, Fig. 4, of driving means 16 leaving the totalizer disengaged at 180 degrees of the machine cycle. Since a stud 44 on the control member 22, Figs. 1, 2, maintains a pawl 41 in a position to transfer rocking motion of a rod 45, actuated by driving means 12, to the operating plate 34, a finger 36 of the plate strikes a stud 32 on the selector plate 26 to rotate the plate 26 to a position where the feeler 51 detects a low surface B. In this position, the finger 64 is positioned so as to transmit rocking of the rod 63 to the operating plate 52 of the mechanism 15. Thus at 320-350 degrees of the machine cycle the calculating pinions of the totalizer 14 enter into engagement with the adding segments of the differential setting mechanism. Sub-total taking operation.-Depression of the sub-total key 19 causes movement of both control members 17, 22 against springs 24, 25. The selector plate 26 is thereby positioned so that the feeler 51 detects the low surface B and the stud 44 rocks the pawl 41 into a decoupling position where rocking of the rod 45 is not transmitted to the finger 36. Movement of the driving rod 63 of the driving means 16 is, however, transmitted to the operating plate 52 of the device 15 so that the totalizer is disengaged at 80-115 degrees but re-engaged at 150-180 degrees of the cycle. In the second half of the sub-total cycle, the position of plate 26 is unchanged since the finger 36 is decoupled and the totalizer is disengaged at 270-300 degrees and re-engaged at the end of the cycle. Total-taking operation.-Depression of the total key 20 only moves the member 17 bringing the low surface B against the feeler 51 when the totalizer is engaged at 115-180 degrees of the cycle after being disengaged at 80-115 degrees. Since the pawl 41 remains in a coupling position, the rocking of rod 45 at about 245 degrees of the cycle causes the finger 36 to strike the stud 33 on the plate 26 to move the plate round until a high surface C is detected. The feeler 51 is then in a decoupling position so that the rocking of rod 63 is not transmitted to the plate 54 and the totalizer remains disengaged at the end of the total-taking cycle. Depression of a “no sale” key 21 only moves control member 22. The selector plate 26 remains in position with a high surface A detected by the feeler 51 and the pawl 41 decouples the finger 36 which cannot then change the position of the plate 26 in the second half of the cycle. The totalizer is thus disengaged at the end of the cycle. Amounts entered into the keyboard and the result of a sub-total or total taking operation are indicated and printed on a receipt printer or audit strip printer. Several totalizers, each having its own driving arm 69, may be included in a single machine.
