1306476 Copolymerization process KANEGAFUCHI KAGAKU KOGYO KK 19 April 1971 [2 May 1970] 25778/71 Heading C3P Copolymers are prepared by contacting (A) a monomer of formula CH 2 = CR 1 R 2 or CH 2 = CR 3 -CH=CHR 4 , where each of R 1 -R 4 is hydrogen, halogen or a non-polymerizable C 1 – C 20 hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon residue; with (B) a conjugated monomer of formula CH 2 = CR1Q or CHR1 = CHQ where R1 is hydrogen, halogen or a non-polymerizable C 1 -C 20 hydrocarbon group, optionally with an inert substituent, and Q is -CN or -CO.Y, where Y is H, Hal, R, ZH, ZR, ZMe or NRaRb, Z is O or S, R is an organic group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, Ra and Rb are each H or a C 1 – C 20 organic group and may be joined together to complete a ring, and Me is a monovalent representation of an element of Groups I, II or III, or ammonium; in the presence of a catalyst comprising (1) a compound of formula R n AlX 3-n where R is an organic group, X is a halogen, and n is 1 to 2; and (2) a compound of formula where each of R1, R11 and R111 is hydrogen, a halogen or an organic group. The polymerization may be carried out in an inert solvent or in the bulk monomers. The products are alternating copolymers. The examples describe the copolymerization of acrylonitrile and butadiene, methyl acrylate or methacrylate with butadiene, acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate with styrene, methyl acrylate with propylene or vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile with allyl chloride and N,N-dimethylacrylamide with vinyl chloride. The exemplified catalyst components are (i) the acetylacetone and dibenzoylmethane complexes of Co(III) and (ii) EtAlCl 2 and Et 3 Al 2 Cl 3 .
