Abstract

1306513 Variable speed gearing FICHTEL & SACHS AG 5 March 1970 [7 March 1969 24 Dec 1969] 10663/70 Heading F2D A variable speed transmission hub for bicycles &c. comprises a shaft 11 about which rotates a driving member 3 (e.g. mounting a chain sprocket wheel) and a hub sleeve 2 enclosing a transmission gear P (e.g. epicyclic) connected to the member 3 and having output from parts of the gear P moving at different speeds, connections (e.g. ratchet clutches 11, K) including at least one clutch acted on by a centrifugal shift device (e.g. masses 19 pivotable at 20 to coact via a plate 21 on the pawls 16 of the clutch K) which can be overridden by an optional shift device 23 … 29 in at least one position thereof, from which it can be moved to allow automatic ratio control. The shift device 23 … 29 is urged to the right by a spring 33, against which it is moved by along the shaft 1 by a rod 26. In the position shown the ramp 23 forces the masses 19 outwards locking the pawls 16 of the clutch K into engagement. Displacement to the right causes an arm 28 to enter a hole 30 in the masses 19 forcing them inwards to disengage the pawls 16. Displacement to the left frees the masses 19 for radial movement, but arms 32 on each side of the hole 30 engage the arm 28 to ensure that the masses 19 and the optional shift device rotate together. Other arrangements included show different axial arrangements of the masses 19, the shift device 23 … 29 and the pawls 16 which may be biased into or out of engagement.
