Abstract

1306742 Coated conductors BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER’S CABLES Ltd 14 Jan 1971 [16 Jan 1970] 2290/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division H1] A method of manufacturing a high voltage insulated electric conductor comprises applying to a conductor an insulation of an ethylene polymer at least 2.5 mm. thick and crosslinking the insulation by subjecting it with high energy radiation, preferably electrons, to cause it to absorb a dose D Mrad in the range 20 to 60 or 25 to 55 Mrad at an average rate R Mrad/sec. The irradiation conditions are represented by a point on Fig. 1 below the curve C’B’DD’ which approximately defines the boundary between sucessful (below the curve) and unsuccessful (above the curve) tests on samples of irradiated cables, or possibly by a point only in the region represented by the expansion R # e0.046(D-10) which is bounded at its lower limit by line BB’. The dose D can be given in a single exposure to radiation of either uniform or non-uniform intensity or can be built up from a number of exposures. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates apparatus suitable for carrying out the process of the invention in which the insulated conductor (1) is passed by guide (2) through the irradiation zones of three electron accelerators (3), set at angles of 120 to one another around the cable, and then, if necessary, passed through the irradiation zones again by using guides (4), the cable possibly being passed directly to a test station (5) after completion of irradiation. Other types of accelerator such as the linear filament or coaxial types could be used when they become commercially viable for the energies required (e.g. 0.8 to 6 Me.v.).
