Abstract
1310929 Carpet sweepers LEIFHEIT INTERNATIONAL GUNTER LEIFHEIT KG 4 May 1970 [9 May 1969] 21353/70 Heading A4F [Also in Division F2] A carpet or other sweeper comprises a brush roller 12 adapted to be driven in a constant direction of rotation by a runner wheel 13 independently of the direction of rotation of the runner wheel, via transmission means including two free-wheel couplings 18, 19 which are alternatively effective dependent upon the direction of rotation of the runner wheel, and include two driven gear-wheels 26, 27 each permanently in drive engagement with and driven by a drive gear 28 coupled to the runner wheel 13. The gearwheels 26, 27, together with toothed ratchet coupling members 24, 25 secured thereto, are rotatable on a transmission shaft 17. Toothed ratchet coupling members 20, 21 non-rotatable but slidable on the shaft 17 are pressed by a spring 23 against members 24, 25. In the two directions of rotation of the runner wheel 13 either the members 20, 24 or the members 21, 25 engage to drive the shaft 17 in one direction only, with relative slipping of the other coupling members in each case. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig.2, two shafts 17, each driven by a runner wheel 13, rotate the brush roller 12 via bevel gearing 31. Disc-shaped auxiliary brushes 33 on the shafts 17 convey dirt to the brush roller 12. In an alternative embodiment the toothed gear-wheels 26, 27, 28 are replaced by bevelled friction wheels, and the toothed ratchet coupling members 20, 24 and 21, 25 by coil springs 42, 43, Fig. 5 (not shown) either of which grips a transmission shaft depending upon the direction of rotation of a runner wheel. Another embodiment, Fig.9 (not shown) comprises a single transmission shaft 17. A further embodiment comprises two brush rollers 46, Fig.6, driven via belt and pulley drives from shafts 52 rotated by runner wheels 48 via differential gearing. Each rear wheel has an interval gear ring 51, Fig.7 (not shown) driving gear-wheels 49 which rotate gear wheels 53, 54 in opposite directions on a shaft 52, the gear-wheels 54 being driven via pinions 50. One of the toothed ratchet couplings 56, 57, dependent upon the direction of rotation of the rear wheels 48, transmits the drive from the gear-wheel 53 or 54 to the shaft 52.
