Abstract
1318824 Data transmission system testing SIEMENS AG 28 April 1971 [29 April 1970] 11780/71 Heading H4P In a testing of a data transmission system where a test pattern of predetermined length is transmitted and compared at the receiver bitby-bit with an identical locally generated test pattern and the total number of errors counted or alternatively the number of bit-blocks containing at least one error counted, the receiver can vary the bit-length of the block on which an assessment is based. In the receiver of Fig. 2 a test pattern received at E is compared bit-by-bit in a comparator V with an identical pattern generated by shiftregister SR having mod-2 addition feedback A1. The two patterns are initially synchronized before measurements are taken by setting the register to a point 20 bit positions before the end of the pattern and then comparing the register output with the received pattern. Any lack of coincidence found by comparator V causes the register to be reset via gate G2 to the 20 bit point. The register on attaining the end of the pattern is deemed to be synchronized and a gate G3 detects the all-zero condition of the register to reset bi-stable K1 via gate G4, so removing the inhibition from gate G1 Any subsequent error pulses from comparator V pass through gates G1, G5 to error counter F2. To measure block-errors, each error signal from the comparator via a now closed switch (not shown) sets bi-stable K2 to close gate G5 so blocking pulses to counter FZ. K2 is only reset at the end of each block by counter Z, so that only one error pulse per block reaches counter FZ. Counter Z is set to the derived block length and is driven by clock pulses T (S1 down) if the block length is less than the test pattern length or by pulses from gate G3 at the end of each test pattern (S1 up) if the block length is greater than the test pattern length. To terminate either measurement switch S2 is put to position 1 and at the end of the next test cycle, for total errors, or at the next coincidence of the end of a test pattern and block length, for block errors, switching unit D operates to set bi-stable K1 via gate G6, so inhibiting gate G1 to further error pulses. The circuit of Fig. 2 may act as a transmitter of the test pattern by putting switch S3 to position 1 and feeding the output of register SR via gate G7 to output A.
