Abstract
1331280 Epoxide-modified polyurethanes REICHBOLD-ALBERT-CHEMIE AG 3 Dec 1970 [8 Dec 1969] 57439/70 Headings C3B, C3P and C3R Epoxide-modified polyurethanes or polyurethane copolymer resins which can be dissolved or dispersed in water are prepared by reacting I (a) 25 to 70% by weight of unsaturated fatty acids, of which 0 to 25% by weight can be present as drying oils, the unsaturated acids and/or the drying oils, containing up to 6% by weight of maleic anhydride as an adduct, the mixture possessing an iodine number of 130 to 390, (b) 0 to 30% by weight of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid or hydroxycarboxylic acid or an anhydride thereof, (c) 3 to 35% by weight of monohydric and/or polyhydric organic hydroxy compounds. (d) 0 to 17% by weight of polyoxyalkylene compounds which contain at least one active hydrogen atom and have an average M.W. of the polyoxylalkylene chain of 200 to 50,000, (e) 1 to 50% by weight of a compound which contains at least one epoxide group, (f) 0 to 60% by weight of a copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compound, conjointly or stepwise by heating until the reaction product has an acid number of 0 to 300, reacting the resultant ester and/or ester ether with (g) 0 to 65% by weight of an unsaturated monoalcohol and/or polyalcohol and (h) 0À05 to 50% by weight of an isocyanate, the reaction of component (I) with (g) and (h) taking place conjointly or with (g) and (h) having been prereacted to form an intermediate product and the reaction taking place so that the OH/NCO group equivalent ratio is 1À01 to 1À45/1 and optionally where the polyurethane contains carboxyl groups converting it, by the addition of alkali and/or organic strong bases, into the state where it can be dispersed or dissolved in water. The polyurethanes may be used as binders in aqueous solutions or dispersions along with, if desired, addition copolymer dispersions or low M.W. heat-curable aldehyde condensation products. In a typical example, a mixture of linseed oil fatty acid, trimethylolpropane and a bisphenol-A/propylene oxide adduct was esterified, thereafter an epoxide resin was reacted therewith, followed by further esterification with trimellitic anhydride. The resulting product was reacted with toluylene diisocyanate and adjusted to pH 7 with triethylamine. A dispersion of the product in water could be produced and used to produce elastic films.
