Abstract

1331885 Treating exhaust gas FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 4 May 1972 20822/72 Heading F1B [ Also in Division F2] The exhaust gases of an I. C. engine 10 are normally delivered from manifold 12 through a first catalytic converter 13 for reducing oxides of nitrogen and through a second catalytic converter 14 for oxidising the hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide present, whereafter they are discharged through a silencer 19 and tail pipe 20. If the system is in danger of overheating, a three-way 15 (see Division F2) closes the connection between the converters and silencer and connects the latter to a by-pass line 16. During engine warm-up air may be supplied to one or both converters via line 17. Exhaust gas may be recirculated to inlet manifold 11 via pipe 18.
