Abstract
1332001 Jointing; riveting DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 30 Dec 1970 [10 Jan 1970] 1310/70 Headings B3U and B3V [Also in Divisions C1 and F2] A friction element for (as shown) an aircraft wheel brake (or a clutch) comprises a block of non- metallic material 4, Fig. 2, having embedded therein a layer of foam metal in the form of a three-dimensional network 3, the layer extending adjacent one surface of the block 4 but not wholly therethrough. The foam metal may be produced by spraying or electro-depositing metal on a polyurethane foam material, or by dipping such a material in metal, and then heating to “ash out” the polyurethane. As shown, each friction element 1 comprises a layer 3 of foam metal embedded in a carbon block 4 adjacent to the surface 5 of the block which is to be attached to a support member 2, Fig. 2. Element 1 is formed by impregnating the foam metal layer 3 with a resin-bonded composition including powdered graphite or other form of carbon and subsequently carbonizing the whole to form the block 4. The part of the pad containing the foam metal layer may be made separately (where the metal cannot withstand the relatively high graphitization temperature) and subsequently bonded to a graphite moulding to form the composite article. The metal of layer 3 may be nickel, steel, copper or molybdenum. The support member 2, Fig. 2, (showing a brake rotor or stator in cross-section) may be steel, beryllium or graphite reinforced with carbon fibre. The friction element 1 is pressed to shape, leaving clearance holes 6, before carbonization, and afterwards is secured by rivets 7. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the density of the foam metal layer is increased around the rivet holes and along the radial abutment edges, and counter-sinking extensions are provided around the rivet holes. In Fig. 4, on the other hand, the density of the foam metal layer increases progressively or stepwise from the interior outwards. In Fig. 5 (not shown) a sheet metal backing plate (51) is brazed or soldered to the “foam metal” face of the block and is dimpled at the rivet holes to engage countersunk depressions in support member 2. In Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) the foam metal layer extends beyond the radial edges of the block, and the rivets pass only through these extensions; the extensions may be densified by impregnation with brazing or other metal. Riveting may be replaced by welding or brazing in this embodiment.
