Abstract

1332403 Polymeric coating compositions PENNWALT CORP 19 April 1971 [16 March 1970] 22142/71 Heading C3P A curable coating composition for a surface such as a cement or asbestos-cement surface is in the form of an aqueous dispersion and comprises 8 parts by weight of a butadiene-styrene or an acrylic resin; 8 to 40 parts of zinc dichromate; 4 to 50% by weight, based on the zinc dichromate, of phosphoric acid; a reducing agent which is compatible in the dispersion for at least two hours at room temperature and which is capable of completely, or substantially completely, reducing the chromium in the zinc dichromate to the Cr3+ form when the composition is cured and heated to 180‹ C. and titanium dioxide pigment which is present in an amount of at least 1 part by weight, and which is optionally in the form of a composition with one or more other pigments, the total amount of pigment being such that a coating formed from the composition when cured comprises 16 to 20% by weight of pigment. The reducing agent may include a hexitol or a pentitol, and/or an alkanolamine. The pigment composition may contain, in addition to titanium dioxide, carbon black, an iron oxide or Cr 2 O 3 . The zinc dichromate may be formed in situ. The coating composition may also contain an amine. An aqueous dispersion suitable for use in preparing such a coating composition comprises 8 parts by weight of an acrylic or butadiene-styrene resin; at least one part of titanium dioxide, optionally together with one or more other pigments, the total amount of pigment being such that the coating when cured comprises 16 to 20% by weight of pigment; and a reducing agent which includes a hexitol or a pentitol which constitutes at least 1/3 by weight of the reducing agent. In the examples the resin is (I and VII) a copolymer of 20% ethyl acrylate and 80% methyl methacrylate, (II) polymethyl methacrylate, (III, IV and VII) a commercially available acrylate resin, (V) polyacrylic acid and (VI) a butadiene styrene copolymer; and the reducing agent is (I) and (VII) D-sorbitol and triethanolamine, (II) D-sorbitol, (III) diethanol isopropylamine, (IV) D-mannitol and triethanolamine, (V) dextrose and ethanol diethylamine, (VI) diethanolamine and (VIII) triethanolamine.
