1338765 Electroluminescence GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 9 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 58535/70 Heading C4S [Also in Divisions H1 and F4] A method of making a solid state lamp assembly comprises attaching a flat solid state light emitting element 11 on to a flat surfaced support member 12, applying a self-hardening lighttransmitting material in liquid form over the element and permitting the material to harden, the quantity of material being such that it assumes a convex meniscus outer curvature with the outer edge of the material lying on the support surface around the element. “Meniscus” is defined as excluding a hemisphere or major portion of a spheroid but including a minor segment of a spheroid. The material may be plastic such as acrylic or an epoxy of refractive index >1. Lamps of “flat chip” GaAs, GaP, or SiC doped to form a P-N junction emitting visible or infra-red are instanced. Circular shell 18 is preferably metal but may be plastic and welded or otherwise attached to flange 19, and includes focusing lens 21. Diode 11 output is increased by the increase of the critical angle by encapsulant 22, and lens 21 may focus into a narrow or wide beam.
