Abstract

1338822 Coating process DOW CHEMICAL CO 14 Jan 1971 [16 Jan 1970] 1866/71 Heading B2E A method for applying a solvent-insoluble particulate material to a woven fabric comprises applying to the fabric a suspension of the particulate material in a halo-carbon or halo-hydrocarbon solvent boiling within the range 5-125‹C and removing the solvent by passing the treated fabric into a zone of heated vapour of the solvent wherein the particulate material is adhered to the substrate by means of a film-forming material applied either dissolved in the suspension or subsequent to the foregoing steps, dissolved in a halo-carbon or halo-hydrocarbon boiling at 5-125‹C followed by removal of the solvent by passing the treated fabric into heated vapour of the solvent. Preferably the fabric is of fibreglass. The particulate material may be a dyestuff or pigment and the vapour of the solvent may be superheated. Numerous suitable solvents are specified, particular preferences being methylene chloride, 1, 1, 1-trichloroethane, trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene. Suitable filmforming materials include polyethylene, polypropylene, chlorinated polyethylene and copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, such as those containing 25-80 weight percent of vinyl chloride and 75-20% by weight of vinylidene chloride. In an Example a fibreglass fabric is treated with a phthalocyanine green pigment dispersed in 1, 1, 1- trichloroethane and the solvent removed by passing the pigmented fabric through a zone containing vapours of the same solvent. The so-pigmented fabric was then treated with a solution of an 80:20 weight per cent copolymer of vinylchloride and vinylidene chloride and again passed through the vapour zone to remove the solvent. The pigment formulation was applied with a doctor blade and the fabric remained in the vapour zone for 10 seconds before being immediately sprayed with the copolymer solution.
