Abstract
1340960 Crash restraint bags REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT and AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT 24 June 1971 [28 July 1970] 29640/71 Heading B7B An inflatable crash restraint bag 6 is mounted on a column 9 surrounded by a rotatable steering wheel hub 2, the hub acting as the driving member for an offset steering column 12. The bag may be arranged to expand along an axis angled to the hub rotational axis so as to afford maximum driver protection. Lines 7 connect the inflating gas source which is opened explosively to a collision sensor. The bag 6 and gas source 5 are mounted within the surface of revolution described by the wheel arms 3. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the bag occupies a position similar to that shown, but the gas source is mounted within the support column 9. The whole of the safety device 5, 6 may be mounted on a swivel joint so that its position may be varied for the individual driver.
