Abstract

1341496 Controlling AC motors LOGIC SAS DI G MARCHI & C 19 April 1971 [23 March 1970] 25677/71 Heading H2J A braking system for a single or multiphase induction motor comprises, in the case of a three phase Y connected motor, the disconnection of the motor stator windings f 1 , f 2 , f 3 from the normal motor power supply line (not shown); the connection of the windings across a single phase supply A, B via a diode D1 and the connection of diodes D2, D3 across each of a pair of windings as shown such that D2 and D3 are connected in the reverse polarity to diode D1. On each positive half cycle of the supply AB a unidirectional current is applied to windings f 1 and f 2 causing a certain degree of braking and during each negative half cycle circulating currents are produced in the two closed loops D3, f 1 ,f 3 and D2,f 2 ,f 1 and generate a large magnitude braking torque which decreases with decreasing rotor speed (Fig. 6, not shown). The application of such a closed loop braking system to other stator winding arrangements is described (Figs. 7-12, not shown) and an arrangement is described in which the diode D1 is replaced by a thyristor (Fig. 13, not shown) so that the braking current may be controlled and limited means may be included for switching off the single phase supply used for braking when the rotor has stopped (Fig. 14, not shown).
