Abstract

1342263 Machines with permanent magnets ELTRA CORP 5 July 1971 [6 July 1970] 31433/71 Heading H2A [Also in Division F1] A combined alternator and ignition generator comprises a permanent magnet rotor and a stator having a plurality of poles, some of which carry windings supplying current to the power circuits of a vehicle and others of which carry windings forming part of the ignition circuit. The external rotor of the machine shown comprises four permanent magnets 40a and balancing weights 42. The stator 20 has twelve poles, poles 4-12 carrying the alternator output windings 34. Pole 1 carries a winding 28 for charging a capacitor in the ignition circuit (see Division F1), pole 2 has no winding and pole 3 carries two windings 30, 32 providing triggering pulses to a thyristor for discharging the capacitor. The part of the rotor without permanent magnets provides a recovery time for the ignition circuit. The winding 30 has five times the number of turns of winding 32 and provides a starting triggering pulse at low speeds of the machine. Winding 32 provides the triggering pulses under normal running conditions of the machine. Additional triggering windings may be provided angularly spaced from those shown.
